The phrase "I must pop in to the loo" has a naval origin too. In the days of sail it was unwise to excrete into the wind so it became "Use the looward head" . In other words the toilet as mentioned in the opening , was to leeward, or down wind. Doesn't work so well now in the days of engine propulsion!

I always thought Loo was derived from Cockney slang.
