trellis arch repair

One thing in the garden that has been bugging me for years and never got around to it

The trellis arch below was supported by a tree branch fixed between the fence and arch top. This was screwed in at both ends. So this afternoon I decided it was about time I fixed it.

well the branch was rotten and supported nothing and the bottom of one arch side had completely gone.

So out with the branch and a couple of support stakes banged into the ground. other side a new piece of wood to provide a new base which can be seen it the photo. Couple of cable ties as clamps. Total cost £0 had odd bits of timber in the garage. Not perfect but better than it was

what does it do? well we have roses bushes the grow there and it supports them

Re: trellis arch repair

This may yet be saved. I think I would remove it from the ground and get it inside the garage where I could work on it. Working very carefully, I'd replace all 4 of the vertical struts with pressure treated wood. (That would absolutely prevent any future rot). If the lattice work is still solid, I'd scrape it down and repaint it and re-attach it to the vertical struts. Paint the entire structure and replace it where it was. You may need to repaint the entire structure every few years. Likely that was a major cause of the problem in the 1st place.

You will probably need to cut back the rose plants in order to move the structure. When moving the structure I'd definitely need a helper to keep it from collapsing.

Re: trellis arch repair

if the bottom vertical struts rot, it is easier just to cut off the rotten bit on site. A sabre electric saw would make the job easy. Anyway it should last my lifetime as it is
