Questions for you seasoned Cruisers..

I'm thinking of booking my first one for this coming August
Either southern Europe or the Canaries..

My first question is..
Does it make a lot of difference if you have an inside or outside cabin.. And is a balcony a must?
And secondly..
How expensive are things like food and drink and entertainment on board?
Being used to All-inclusive holidays I don't really fancy paying through the nose every time I fancy a drink or meal while we sail

Rhian, I am not experienced as such, but, I have been on cruises.

Firstly for me, I need at least a window.
Waste of money paying extra for a balcony, I never used ours, apart from the once as we left Port.
All food is included in the price, it is far more than I could eat.
You do pay for drinks, but I took my own wine, I asked the steward to empty the fridge in our cabin, I simply decanted the wine into a sealed cup thing that kept it cool all evening. I don't think drinks were that expensive I might add, I am just fussy about my wine.
All entertainment is included in the price.

Re: Questions for you seasoned Cruisers..

I have been on a few cruises, and always preferred the all inclusive buffet, rather than the dining rooms where you are served by waiters. I prefer to fill my plate as I please. There is no obligation to use the restaurants where you pay extra.

Teas and coffees were usually free and available all the time (well they were on the now redundant Ocean Village...we even had tea making facilities in each cabin).

Neither Mum nor I were alcohol drinkers, and I sometimes had a cold drink with ice if the weather was hot or we’d just returned from a port outing.

They don’t like you using the cabin fridge for your own stuff but we did it anyway. Nobody tells me I can’t use it, ever! Even in hotels I would put my own stuff in.

I would dearly love another cruise, but single supplements now make it a no-no.

Does every cruise ship have an all-inclusive buffet area then?

I suppose I can just phone and ask can't I?!!!

having done several cruises if one can afford it get a balcony suite every time.

Food is free unless you want to go to a specialist meal, we just used the stuffit buffet one like this. soft drinks
tea/coffee free from machines

typical stuffit buffet with wide choice of food

entertainment is free, get to one of the big stage shows at least 1/2 hour before it starts they fill up quickly.

Only "extras" are things like conducted tours when docked. Some prefer looking around for themselves, we find conducted tours you learn more about the place.
the cruise will mention what is extra.

Remember if it is an English or American cruise line the money will be in that currency. Any extras on board go onto your credit card which they already have taken the account number.

Watch out for the 'staff tip rip-off' Rhian, which I understand you can get out of by visiting the bursar. Tips can be as much as £5 per person per day - something that has always put me off tbh.

@Jazzi
That's so unfair to penalise single travellers like that
I'd phone them up close to the sailing date and ask them to offer a better price
Chances are they would rather get the all cabins filled than get the extra money by that time
