Cars

Why, when looking to buy a used car, is the most lost object in the world, in booklet form "Service History"?, and when in the "Old Days" 100,000 miles meant "Round The Clock", cars with this many miles still command £5000 plus.

Re: Cars

I heard the other day though that 100,000 miles today - is not considered a lot as the new cars can handle that mileage no problem - still, cars are ridiculously over priced

Re: Cars

I always remember that after so many miles one had to de-coke the engine. That is no longer the case modern engines especially diesel, can go on for longer than the body of the car.`100,00 miles is now considered just run in and sticking to speed limits on new engines to wear them in is old hat.
I hate to think of the number of cars my pal and I de-coked and REDEX was added to fuel

de-coke = removing carbon deposit from piston heads and valves.

Re: Cars

What is servicing and no I would never, unless broke or it was a classic buy a car which had been around the clock.

Re: Cars

Yes, I remember the de-coke days, usually did it to try and get a couple more BHP, along with polishing the ports and re grinding the valves.

Re: Cars

Sorry but I don’t know anything about cars Spitty.
My granny used to say if she saw someone fixing a broken down car, “Sell it and buy an Ass”, does that help?

Particulate filters or dpf fitted to diesel cars usually give problems when the car is used on a lot of short journey's and the engine doesn't get chance to get hot enough to burn off the particulates and soot ect which in turn can lead to the dpf failing ( and can be quite expensive to fix) its advisable to regularly give the car a good long blast down the motorway/dual carriageway if you can

I've been looking around at possibly replacing our 2002 Punto this year but I am appalled at the asking prices of 2nd-hand cars now.
Our little car's probably worth about £800 at most but today I saw one the same age and condition as ours on a forecourt for £1999!!

Something's skewed as far as I can see in pricing and I still do not trust ANY car salesman! stevmk2

Re: Cars

Hi

I never buy new, always around 3 years old and mileage really does not worry me if the car has been serviced.

I used to buy ex works cars, always had a computer print out of all servicing and repairs.

My beloved Subaru estate had 260,000 miles when I sold it, it now has 319,000 on it and the new owner thinks it is great.

Great car, but at only 20 mpg it had to go when I retired.

Ex Mobility cars are good buys, always well maintained and come with full history.
