I understand how you feel perfectly, Tess, because I am exactly the same. Some of us have to keep things simple.

My son bought me a camera about 3 years ago now, and I still haven't used it because I don't understand it and worrying over it takes the pleasure out of snapping pics.

The best camera I ever had was my old one that took films that had to be developed!

I am not a perfectionist, I just like to take pictures as memories without bothering about lenses, angles, lights and endless other things, and I am sure there are many more like us.

You'll find something, don't worry about it.

I knew you'd understand Mups!

I took up photography to replace drawing and painting when my hands started playing up, so it's a paintbrush to me!
I love the editing and special effects bit too, but you need a clear picture to start with!

Re: New camera needed, any recommendations please?

Unfortunately unless you go for the cheapest camera such as the Nikon Coolpix A300 Camera for £72 even this has a reasonable amount in the menu
anything above this will confuse you

You don't get into a car and drive without learning how to, so why buy a camera without learning a bit about it. No point in getting one then

Re: New camera needed, any recommendations please?

I've been on a few photography courses and come out even more confused.
One guy, who inspired me, was a professional photographer who had taken royalty and famous folk. He said some of his best photos were using his phone or a compact camera even though he had thousands of pounds worth of equipment.
He pointed out that my photos would be clearer if I cleaned the lens!

That Lumix looks good and simple to use Roxy, how is it with Macro?

Tessa, That camera above. Just set it to auto and then point, you can slide the zoom in and out with ease, to suit what you need. Then press the capture button. Easy Peasy. Buttons are next to each other on the top of the camera, for right hand use.

Re: New camera needed, any recommendations please?

you say you have taken a few photographic courses, erm not the best way to learn in my opinion. You need someone to take the time and go through step by step over a period long enough for you to understand in simple terms which might be weeks..

With someone beside you telling you what and how and why is far far better than any courses

Doing that may be ok but a camera is capable of more, spending money on a product when you only use say 2 percent of what it can do is a waste

Re: New camera needed, any recommendations please?

I agree, but then that's up to the user. As I said I often use the shoot n zoom/capture, but that's for sudden quick things that come up on my walks, usually wildlife and I can't wait. I like the 6 second burst of moving picture, and I often use that. If I'm heading out in the evening then I set to evening/night modes. I also like the video mode but as I said I often just use the auto if I wandering up the riverbank ect ect.

Ah, right, one of those, a bridge camera. I was looking at pocket cameras.
