Good one. Why can't they fit one? Don't you have a meter now?

It has to be within a certain distance of the original meter - several feet I think. Our meter is on ground floor outside our flat so we can't have one.

Re: Energy: SMART Meters

Smart Meter or not

British gas have told us today that we are now ready for the "Upgrade " to the Smart meter if we want, but everyone has to have one by 2020. I know this bit to be untrue as about a year ago I watch a "Watch Dog " program saying they were not compulsory.

I am unsure what to do so I have been looking at a message board that I found with those that have them very very few liked them and said they found they were paying more every quarter than ever before.

The one reason I thought it would be good is you don't have to send your meter readings in any more.
Apparently they work off a little thing similar to a symcard in your mobile not as I thought through WiFi

Has anyone already had them fitted and what's your opinion of them.

Re: Energy: SMART Meters

I have friends who have them and their bills are higher now. The cost of those new machines and installation has to be recouped from somewhere

Smart meters will be rolled out as standard across the country by 2020. But there will not be a legal obligation on individuals to have one.

Re: Energy: SMART Meters

We have had a smart meter for almost a year now and to me there's nothing to not like about them. I like the fact that I don't have to send monthly meter readings in and the bills are more accurate because they have the exact readings.

This also a good article to read about cost Marj

A brilliant innovation? Or a sinister and intrusive technology that will give energy suppliers – acknowledged as some of Britain’s worst businesses for customer service and billing errors – even more scope to bungle?
