Being cautious before getting closer to a person seems to work for me.
At one point in my life, about 9 years ago, I wouldn't let anyone close to me, always suspicious of their motives. ended up with only acquaintances, and that's not the way to make friends.
Now I know cautious and not suspicious tends to allow you to know some very honest people. It is more rewarding at the end of the day.
