The George Washington Bridge
What marvel of construction it is, designed by Othmar H Ammann in 1927 it was way ahead of it's time.
The engineer had the foresight to see that the car would be the most popular mode of transport in the future.
Originally the bridge had one deck with eight lanes but Mr Ammann built in extra strength so they could sling a lower deck in 1962 thus doubling the capacity of traffic.
What a pity the architect of the Forth Road Bridge here didn't learn a lesson from history, the bridge, built in the 1960's, is now not capable of handling today's traffic so they'll have to build a new one.
