Making a Pond for Wildlife

IN my gardening mag. last week they had an article about making ponds for wildlife.

The RHS has teamed up with the Wildlife Trust and have released a booklet called . . "Big or Small, Ponds for All."

Lots of pictures and advice on things like helping hedgehogs, frogs and toads to stay safe, which plants to put in it and how to care for it.

Even a wee mini pond about a foot deep will help some creatures survive, it hasn't got to be a lagoon.

For anyone who might be interested, you can download their booklet called - "Big or Small, Ponds for All,"

That's interesting Mups, will download that, as where we are moving to, they have two Ponds, which he has Koi Carp in them, but he is taking the fish with him and I don't want to put more fish back in there, but I would like to make it a Wildlife Pond, so that will be a good read for me.

Thank you.

Just to let you see,

That they don't have to be enormous .

I put mine in about 3 yrs ago, they are abundant with wildlife,it's a joy to watch the birds drink from them, some even bath on the large stone.if you look closely you can see tadpoles.

Have you got a wildlife pond,Mups?..or anyone else?

Pauline, that looks a very nice little pond, like the greenery around it, but with the overhanging rocks, how does anything (like frogs for example) climb out? Is there a ramp somewhere I can't see?

Don't you worry,Mups,my frogs are well looked after,

Here you go.

Also the other end has rocks.

Can you see all the bird droppings on the stones,it shows how often they frequent the tiny ponds,it is like a wildlife paradise here!.

I have a bit of a problem at the moment. A couple of weeks ago, the filter got blocked and I awoke to find the fish in about three inches of water so had to fill it with water pretty quickly along with dechlorinator. The fish are fine but it has messed up the balance and has gone very green. Last week I installed a ridiculously priced UV filter which says it guarantees clear water in two weeks but we shall see.

I am thinking of redesigning the filter too.

Perhaps some pics in the summer when it should have settled down a bit.
