Are Forums Dead in The Water

I read on another forum a post from the owner , that in his opinion Over 50 forums are dying , soon to be dead in the water. The reason being in his opinion that there are better ways to contact that have greater diversity and are not so clique forming with narrow minded people.

Truth is I felt sorry for the guy a lot as he has put a lot into years of getting the forum up and running.

What do you think?

I think specialist forums will go on for ever, I'm part of a couple of medical ones that are booming, mind they are polite, nice and helpful. This combatant style won't last IMO it gets boring pretty quickly.

Re: Are Forums Dead in The Water

I think the forums that die the quickest are usually the 'invitation only' ones where only 'the chosen' are allowed to join. You visit them and you'd think you're in a ghost town!
I think the forums that are the most successful are, the ones that are welcoming, friendly and have a good bubbly atmosphere.
I like the forums that are not overly policed by jobsworth moderators.
Heavy handed, beggars on horseback type moderators are usually the 'kiss of death' to a forum!

This forum is great!

Then Art I would ask this. Why is this forum mainly in posting terms the home of a few home grown posters and a few from Aussie. Unlike some other forums as you mention , which attract very high percentage of posters from the USA etc, thus enriching the posting with diversity , rather than what some may call small minded posting?

Well Friends Reunited also finished and that was mainly for the older generation, it seems a shame to me as I was on it for years and didn't have any problems on there,. but I think it was also suffering from lack of interest towards the end !

Dukey, Maybe, they don't know about this forum? I didn't know it existed, until another member recommended it to me!
I don't know of any, or seek any forums in other lands so maybe the same applies to their inhabitants too?

That's a fair question we've haemoraged posters who used to post regularly though so something isn't working to keep people here.

I have noticed a few more are joining each day.
Why, when the going gets tough, do some members run away? I feel they should stay and support the forum they belong to. It's like cutting off their nose to spite their face!

Re: Are Forums Dead in The Water

The Duke has a point (for once).
Yanks are conspicuous by their absence here.
Perhaps we should all try to attract a few.

Whilst it is wrong to generalize, I find many of them to be so
"what's right for America is right for the world"
which often leads to lively discussion.

Besides, Pommie-bashing is usually half-hearted,
cat-bashing is necessary but futile but ....
Yank-bashin' is always heaps of fun !
