Shoes

Is it a good quality to have the ability to place oneself in someone else's shoes?

Re: Shoes

Yes Paul I think having empathy is what makes us human.

(What a very normal question )

Re: Shoes

I think it’s a good quality in a person, it shows they have consideration for others, unfortunately it’s becoming a very rare quality in these days of me me me, and now now now.
Because you can’t feel what the other person is feeling doesn’t mean their pain doesn’t exist.
If the day ever comes when we can turn our backs to the misery of our fellow men it will mean the end of civilisation, in my opinion.

It's self-preservation really. You feel empathy for others ( and give help if needed) in the hope that others will do the same for you.

Re: Shoes

It's well known that lacking empathy is common amongst habitual criminals. They often don't have the ability to put themselves in others' shoes so don't have a conscience about what they do. CEOs are often lacking in it too which means they can bully and fire people with little pain involved.

One of the early predictors of criminality.and/or severe autism is cruelty to animals - again, the absence of empathy. So it is an important human trait but the amount you have varies from a little bit which probably isn't serious to a lot which is.

Re: Shoes

I know instinctively if someone is in pain , I can see it and feel it . I also think if one has suffered in life they have more empathy for others suffering .

Re: Shoes

Unfortunately there are too many companies that don't see the customers side of things, all they see is money coming in. I think every Boss should go under cover to find out what happens on the ground floor, then they may be more sympathic.
