Gutters and Cobblestones

I noticed that after Prince Phillip's funeral that several women, wearing (pretty) very high heels, navigated walking across cobblestones without assistance from the gentleman.

I would have thought that might be Covid-19 related, but I also noticed that if a woman was walking on the street side of the sidewalk the gentlemen didn't rearrange the situation. At one point, one of the women was even crowded off the sidewalk and had to walk the gutter, while her escort remained on the sidewalk.

I am not one to demand such courtesies, but they sure are appreciated when offered .

Isn't it customary to protect and assist women, or are those behaviors outdated and going by the wayside?

Not any longer and in any case why? Women wanted equality. They got it. Suck it up.

I think SM is referring to manners, not equality!

I would expect such a courtesy given to me, and if it wasn't, I would walk ahead so I remained on the pavement. Not that I expect anyone to walk in the gutter, but surely they could go in single file or some such. Its only for a short distance.

I noticed this myself when watching the funeral. Even with restrictions, the gentlemen of the family could have offered an arm to steady their partners who are in their bubble.
It is manners and courtesy.

Yes.

From what I can tell, people (regardless of sex) have inclination to help out others. I was just wondering whether or not what I saw was a one time thing, a cultural, across-the-pond, a shift in society as a whole, or perhaps something that just isn't taught or modeled anymore.

Courtesy is the easiest, least expensive, most direct form of respect that I can think of. We all feel better when we offer and are the subject of it.

I don't do manners. If someone stumbles then I'll put out a hand to prevent them going over but that's all. It would make no difference of which of the TWO sexes they were.

You have mentioned as much before, so I appreciate your input. I am wondering whether you are the exception or the rule. I suspect the latter, but there may be societal shift.

AT, is this your personality or were you conditioned to be like this because of circumstances surrounding your youth?

That's being mannerly. See, there is a tiny todger heart in there somewhere.

Surely the two are inseparable?
