I find that quite interesting, as someone who says it automatically. Is it because you don't think of it?

Hi

I always say please and thank you.

Management are the problem not the minimum wage staff.

Never, ever be rude to those at the bottom of the pile.

Thank you Swimmy. I'm sure it is appreciated by all. And yes, management are a huge problem. But the customers are fabulous...most, anyway!

That is a shame, AT. You are missing out on the simple satisfaction and pleasures that comes with politeness and congeniality.

...and I try to add on that list of automatic courtesies, "May I help you?"

Why is he missing out.....he may get pleasure from not saying please and thank you....think about it.......it doesn’t make him a bad person if he doesn’t have manners....not that you are saying he is.

Re: Gutters and Cobblestones

Ooh, good point. I hadn't considered that AT might take pleasure from not exercising politeness. Do you, AT?

At a minimum, some, like those with autism or Asperger's syndrome, they don't get pleasure from the omission of saying such things as "please" and "thank you" but saying such things can be very difficult.

That's quite a leap to go from practicing politeness to judging a person as being "good" or "bad" , but that leads me to wonder...

Why do we practice politeness? I would argue that giving and receiving respect and kindness gives at lease one of the two parties involved more pleasure than not, and on a grander scale, it reduces the potential for resentment...which can lead to conflict.

Re: Gutters and Cobblestones

It makes some people feel powerful when they don’t say please and thank you.......I like to say please and thank you....but try not to judge those who don’t have manners in that area, i was married to a man who had no manners...he used to put his cigarette butt out on my dinner plate,...they have their own story.

I’ve been at both ends of the spectrum...downright rude...to well mannered and polite.

I choose well mannered and politeness, once I’d figured it all out...it’s a choice at the end of the day isn’t it?

TAT is in control of his own choices and he knows it.

Pauline, how interesting what you said about power! If people choose not to be polite because they think it gives them power - isn't that sort or power an illusion?

I went back to add people on the autism spectrum as people who may not get satisfaction or pleasure from politeness.

Re: Gutters and Cobblestones

I wish times were like they used to be. I'm not into all this womans lib stuff personally, I actually feel quite sad that those times have all about gone, there are still a few left but are certainly a dying breed when our generation is gone that's it. Oh well, I won't be here then so it doesnt matter but it does sadden me
