Re: Doing Without

Yes, I would lose my mobile phone and cooker. I couldn't be without my fridge/freezer and tumble drier.

Re: Doing Without

Modern appliances were and still are supposed to make our lives more comfortable. I utilise all my domestic appliances on a daily basis and wouldn't be without any of them.

Margaret I am intrigued,if you didn't have a cooker how would you cook the things in your fridge freezer

The last thing to go would be my cooker, I can manage without most things but not my cooked food

Re: Doing Without

Mine would be..Mobile Phone and Dishwasher. I do have a pay as you go mobile, which is very rarely used. The dishwasher I regard as the biggest waste of time and space. Besides thats my permanent job indoors!

Re: Doing Without

I could easily do without my phone, I hardly use it anyway likewise my mobile phone though I do need a phone line for my broadband connection.

I don't have a dishwasher and could do without a washing machine if I had too.

I wouldn't like to be without my radio or computer

Re: Doing Without

Some very interesting replies here. Somebody said car, which I don't consider to be an appliance as such. I should have said electrical/electronic appliances - plug-in stuff.

I couldn't do without my cooker but, at a push, I could manage without my microwave, although I do use it for those TV dinners when I'm too tired to cook. I could do without my little halogen cooker, but not my slow cooker.

I have so many appliances like a coffee machine which I never use, an electric steamer which I never use and so on and so forth.

I'd never dream of buying a rice steamer as you can steam rice in an ordinary pan with a tight lid on, so I don't see the point in buying one, but I definitely couldn't manage without my washing machine or dryer. We really do rely on many of these things these days which our grandmas managed without.

Re: Doing Without

Mollie, the rice steamer is really just an electric pot ... I make soup in it, cook vegetables ... it's essential!

Re: Doing Without

Why though? When I'm cooking rice, I bring the pan to a boil then cover it with a tight fitting lid and switch off the power and allow it to steam on its own. Can't say this for vegetables but, once the rice has soaked up the water sufficiently, it's cooked and costs less in gas/electric.

Not so with hard vegetables such as carrots or potatoes though.

Re: Doing Without

Mollie, I wasn't clear: it's called a "rice cooker" but is simply an electric pot, and yes, I cook potatoes in it, carrots too; anything you need a pot to cook in. Today I made miso soup in it for lunch, and pasta e fagioli at dinner.
