Re: Occular migraine?

My migraine attacks were vicious in my 30’s ,described by a consultant as “ classical migraine” because of how I described the aura . ....this is what comes before the head pain .
These are very different to those headaches when people tell you “ I have a migraine “ .

My claim to fame , or one of them , is after reading Oliver Sack’s ( I’m sure you’ll know who I mean ) book Migraine I wrote to him via his publisher ...and reader , received a reply !
So my advice Annie and others is , try to get hold of a copy of that book although I don’t know if it’s still in print . You will be amazed at the information and case historys of those he treated and mostly will relieve your worries .

I do still get attacks of disturbed vision and what he described as “scintillating scotoma” in my case stars , moving from one side of the vision to the other in a path , repeated when completed .
These usually last about 20 minutes and very often occur indoors when the light outside is particularly bright . A friend does get this after he’s been on a library pc so again I’m guessing it’s something to do with light .

Nowadays I don’t get the headache .
As a reassurarance I was told these in no way herald a stroke .

Re: Occular migraine?

I had terrible megraine ,so much so I was even sick driving home after work from BT. Get home and straight to bed only to have the same thing next day and nearly every day. One of the reasons I left BT the pressure was too much they put on you. Six months later with our own business that megraine died down and the pressure/stress on us was only what we put on ourselves

Re: Occular migraine?

Thanks all for the information and reassurance that this does not mean I am going blind. It seems this is more common than they say. My main worry is that I have an old retinal scar which is outside my peripheral vision and I think may have happened when I had an anaphylactic shock years ago. So my first thought was that it was detaching but apparently that has different symptoms. Of course you cannot easily look up anything online when you're in the middle of this!

Zuleika I have an Oliver Sacks book - "the man who mistook his wife for a hat", which was recommended when I was doing a psychology foundation. I will definitely look up his Migraine book on your recommendation. He was a very respected expert in his field. I hadn't realised that he'd also written "Awakenings" which was made in the Hollywood film with Robin Williams and de Niro.

Re: Occular migraine?

I'm so relieved to read I'm not the only one to suffer what I call "looking down a kaleidoscope mixed with dagged lines" vision about ½hr before a migraine hits. I've been suffering these since I reached puberty but have only been on medication for them for the last 20years or so.

They can be very frightening .. especially the first one you experience. You think the worst.

Re: Occular migraine?

Yes, there is. My current medication is 25mg Topiramate 2x/day with 2x50mg Sumatriptam if a migraine actually breaks through. Topiramate is actually an anti-epileptic drug but it is efficasious for migraines as well. To begin with my Dr started me on Amitriptyline (an old broad spectrum anti-depressant) which knocked me about summat shocking so I came off that after just a month or so and went onto Propranolol but this eventually stopped working. Doc started me on Topiramate about 6yrs ago just after we moved to Worcester.

Re: Occular migraine?

A hotelier friend of mine had migraine attack’s every day !! Was on countless different types of medication until it was discovered by a specialist that it was the half pint of orange juice he downed every day that was causing them .

Art that's pretty scary. That everyday things can trigger something so horrid. When it happened I found lights and noise really unpleasant. It hasn't come back yet although I feel "migrainey"... I guess I should expect little sympathy from the doctor if I mention it.

Annie, I’m sure your doctor will sympathise but mine did but reassured me that it wouldn’t lead to other serious things.

You wonder how those coloured kaleidoscope type zig zags can happen in your sight. I have also had sort of waves in front of my eyes but they are just blackish with no colour.
I have been given medication in the past but it made me feel worse than better.
I have noticed that the zig zag episode usually occurs after days of feeling so well.
