That looks pretty devastating Ciderman ...
I confess, I never knew that New Zealand has suffered one that bad. One always tends to think of the ruins of the 1906 San Francisco quake.

That is awful. I am sad to say I didn't know about it either.
What I can't understand is how one house can still be whole & all the others around it flattened.

It was always known as "The Napier Earthquake" but it affected all of Hawkes Bay. The absolute destruction of Napier had a long standing positive aspect in that Napier was entirely rebuilt in the years following in the era when 'Art Deco' was the in architecture. This has resulted in a great interest to tourists as it became known as the Art Deco capital of the world.

I didn't know about it either....so is this art decor capital now waiting for the next big one? I always wonder why they rebuild on these vulnerable sites.

We live on a constantly shifting world Summer, who can forecast where the vulnerable places are. It's only recent statistics that can point to places that are 'More Likely' to suffer from these catastrophic events, but we are never really sure. It could be a thousand years before Napier suffers from another earthquake and it's just a desirable place to live, much like San Francisco.

It just goes to show the incredible power of nature, and some people think they can control the climate. Well good luck with that!

We get 14000 shakes a year . Most of them we don't feel but there are about 3 or 4 a year in the above 5 Richter. Another place of interest is Auckland which sits amongst 50 volcanic cones the last of which erupted about 600 years ago, when no Europeans were here but Maori were. I have often visited Rangitoto and crawled into fumeroles and up to the top.
