Coronavirus: Almost 30,000 'excess' care homes deaths

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-53280011

The Office for National Statistics figures are the first to reveal the full toll on care homes, including deaths that happened in hospital.

Care homes in England will carry out routine testing from Monday.

There were just over 66,000 deaths of care home residents in England and Wales between 2 March and 12 June this year, compared to just under 37,000 deaths last year.

Covid-19 was the leading cause of death for male care home residents, accounting for a third of all deaths, and the second most-common cause of death for female residents, after dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

While 20,000 mentioned Covid-19 on the death certificate, another 10,000 of the excess deaths were registered to other, non-Covid, causes.

Previous analysis from the ONS has suggested that many of those "non-Covid" deaths could have involved undiagnosed coronavirus.

Three-quarters of these deaths occurred within the care homes themselves and a quarter were care home residents who died in hospitals.
30,000 excess care home deaths out of 65,000 excess deaths in total for the UK - both figures are appalling and an indictment of the government's inadequate response to the appearance of COVID-19.

This is a direct reflection on the depleted facilities of the NHS - having be subjected to years of Tory cuts and privitisation, they just haven't got the beds - hence the Nightingale Hospitals. BUT..........I'd bet none of the elderly got into the Nightgales - they would have been sent back to their care homes and spread the virus to others.

It's a euphemism for yet more Tory cuts!

Boris Johnson blames high death rate in care homes on providers failing to follow health guidelines

https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/120471...elines-deaths/

Speaking on a visit to Goole in Yorkshire, the PM said: "We discovered too many care homes didn't really follow the procedures in the way that they could have.”

The National Care Forum (NCF) hit back by telling the PM to start "turning the dial up on reform and down on blame".

Boris Johnson criticised over 'cowardly' care home comments

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-53315178

Speaking to the Radio 4's Today programme, Mark Adams, CEO of charity Community Integrated Care, said he was "unbelievably disappointed" by the reaction. "I think at best this was clumsy and cowardly," he continued. Mr Adams added there had been a "travesty of leadership" from the prime minister on care homes.

Earlier, the National Care Forum said Mr Johnson's remarks were "frankly hugely insulting" to care workers. Vic Rayner, executive director of the forum which represents 120 social care charities, told BBC Newsnight that care homes followed the guidance "to the letter" but the government's attention was focused on hospitals.

Shadow care minister Liz Kendall told the BBC that care workers had been "abandoned" by the government, adding: "This attempt to shift responsibility is a new low."

The government maintains it threw a "protective ring" around care homes - a claim critics say is at odds with failures in providing personal protective equipment (PPE) and allowing hospital patients to be discharged without being tested.
Boris Johnson's government is rapidly beoming adept at "managing" the figures and evading responsibility for its' own failures .....

Indeed .....

Here's a detailed summary/timeline of the inept government's approach to dealing (or not dealing) with COVID-19 in care homes and care patients in hospitals:

No 10 refuses to apologise for PM's 'crass' care home remark

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-53324089

Labour's shadow health secretary Jonathan Ashworth said people were "insulted" by Mr Johnson's "crass remarks".

"Care providers were sent conflicting guidance throughout this outbreak, staff could not access testing until mid-April and are still not tested routinely, PPE supplies have been inadequate, thousands of families have lost their loved ones in care homes to this disease, care workers themselves have died on the front line," he told MPs.

And Unison, a trade union which represents workers providing public services, said: "It's despicable for Boris Johnson to blame incredible, dedicated care workers for his own government's failings.

"Care staff have kept working throughout to help the vulnerable, putting their own health at risk with little or no protective kit and without testing.

"The prime minister should be ashamed, take responsibility and commit to proper, lasting reform of social care."
Johnson is groomed by Cummings and will take all steps necessary to distort the truth, including lying blatantly .....

It's no surprise though is it?
It's damage limitation and avoidance tactics ready for when the blame game begins.
My understanding was that the NHS hospitals sent a lot of elderly people back to care homes without properly testing them?
If that's the case there'll be thousands of grieving relatives, some maybe wanting compensation off the government .... or at least some kind of investigation.

Boris seems to be incapable of apologising for anything ..or even showing any empathy or passing interest in the UK people.
He showed the same lack of concern over the people flooded out of their homes in Yorkshire.

In that respect he's a very poor PM. Possibly the worst we've ever had, despite his pithy trademark platitude ... ' I absolutely understand .........'

Your understanding is correct:

Moving patients from hospitals to care homes

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/52674073

On 19 March, government guidance said that "unless required to be in hospital, patients must not remain in an NHS bed".

This policy was implemented to free up beds in advance of an expected surge in coronavirus patients.

On 2 April, the rules on discharging to care homes were clarified, saying "negative [coronavirus] tests are not required prior to transfers/admissions into the care home".

Even elderly patients who tested positive could be admitted to care homes, according to the document, if measures - such as wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) and isolation - were used.

From 15 April, the government said that all patients discharged from hospitals would be tested for coronavirus.

By this date, over 28,116 elderly patients had been moved from hospitals to care homes in England but there are no statistics to show how many cases of coronavirus were transmitted this way.

Up to this point more than 5,700 care home residents had died in England and Wales (either in homes or in hospital).
So, regardless of what BJ says, it was government policy to eject 28,000 untested patients back into care homes, which, due to government policies, were ill-prepared to deal with a deadly virus .....

This makes me feel physically sick!

One if our local care homes have staff that haven't been home since lockdown, they finally went home this week. They chose to look after their patients, heroes without question.

Hi

We are back to the Blair years when it comes to manipulation and refusal to accept blame.

Boris is moving to daily press briefing delivered by a PR Specialist.

The Trump system, it allows Boris to avoid questions.
