Aretha Franklin

OK, as nobody seems to have commented on her death - they've been reporting on it on BBC for about an hour now. I don't think if she had been royalty there could be more coverage.

I'm not a fan of soul music, although I get that she was a good singer, but is this over the top stuff really necessary for someone who was just an entertainer at the end of the day? I just don't get all the superlatives and outpourings of sorrow and grief. It must be sad for her family and her fans, but surely no more than any other performer.

Re: Aretha Franklin

Aretha Franklin was more than a good singer, she was a great singer, up there with Ella Fitzgerald, Bessie Smith and many others. She wasn't called The Queen Of Soul for nothing - she was The Queen of Soul.

I do understand how you feel about it though, BBC news (and other news services) do go a bit over the top with some of their news items and it does annoy me at times.

Re: Aretha Franklin

Aretha Franklin was arguably the finest soul singer the world has ever produced. I haven't seen any more news since I heard she was very poorly yesterday and whilst this isn't unexpected, it's still a shock to see her pass away.

Re: Aretha Franklin

That's the first I have heard about it. I've never really been a fan but can appreciate her importance within the industry.

I enjoyed her cameos in the Blues Brothers movies.
