Re: Thursday daily chat

It's been very sticky here today, but rain coming down now and it's feeling a bit cooler. OH went out to play golf and didn't enjoy it because it was so hot. Luckily, half way round the course a man came out from the clubhouse with a buggy full of cold drinks. He had taken water with him but had finished it before then. OH is fast asleep in the lounge atm. AND he's 6 months younger than me!!!

(Unusually) I have the TV on (Normally it stays off till 6pm, with the exception of live sport) and am following the Harry Patch funeral. It's really quite a significant day, isn't it? Maybe it is prompting a surge of thought about the horror of WW1, the weakness of the treaties which ended it, the rise of fascism to WW2 and on to current conflicts. Putting a human face on these things brings the true facts home.

Isn't Wells a lovely place?
Oh DM, was that your last WWI veteran? Read about it in our news here. Truly the end of an era.

Unseasonably chilly here in normally semi-tropical Washington in August; only 21C and rain. Was lazy, slept in and just pottered about; nothing happening. Leia thinks we have another mouse !

Re: Thursday daily chat

Yes DM - Harry Patch, conscripted at 18 and fought and wounded (and lost his 3 best mates) at Passcendale(?sp). He died at 111, just a couple of weeks after Henry Allingham, the last surviving volunteer and the world's oldest man when he passed at 113. There were three mega-oldies at the Cenotaph at last year's Remembrance Service - they've all gone now.
He was an amazing character, kept al his marbles to the end, and was a wonderful ambassador for non-violence resolution of conflict. He didn't talk (at all) of his war experiences till he passed 100. What a time to keep memories like that bottled up. You might like to look for his autobiography The Last Fighting Tommy
