Re: A new trade deal in the making

Keezoy is right Australia doesn't care about European squabbles at all however what does have to be remembered is that the Australian Government is a coalition between the Liberal Party and the National Party (used to be the Country Party). The National Party used to represent the farming industry but are currently under extreme pressure from the Shooters Fishers and Farmers Party so are desperate to reclaim their base.

Any trade deal (and I really mean ANY) has to be of benefit to the farming sector so you can be sure that opening up Britain to Australian agricultural exports is front and centre of any negotiations for a FTA.

Look at Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) objectives for trade with the EU

https://www.dfat.gov.au/trade/agreem...fta-objectives

...and with the UK

https://www.dfat.gov.au/trade/agreem...fta/objectives

Agriculture is always the first thing mentioned.

Re: A new trade deal in the making

Another excellent article by Catherine McBride yesterday published on Briefings for Britain. The UK - Australia trade deal means much more than just trade, as Catherine explains.

A trade deal between Australia and the UK should be the easiest negotiation in the world. One imports what the other exports. A trade deal would allow UK consumers to finally escape the EU’s protectionist grip. But there would be a much greater political benefit from a deal. It would decisively signal a shift away from BRINO and send a clear message to the EU and to China: that the UK and Australia will not be bullied. There are alternative suppliers and alternative markets for their products.

Hi

A Free Trade Agreement with Australia, will only add a fraction of !% of GDP.

Much more in Australian favour than the UK.

It will hammer our meat industry.

If you read the article, it says otherwise.

It concerns not just the trade parts but the other political aspects. Feel free to move it if you want.

With your meat industry's past history of Mad Cow disease, substituting horse meat and salmonella isn't that something to look forward to?

Considering both countries have been in the commonwealth for ages, it's rather strange they politically need an understanding based on a simple trade deal?
