This Year's Bulbs
I have been reading an article about this year's bulb supply, and apparently there is going to be a shortage soon.
Some of the big bulb suppliers and growers are saying they are experiencing "severe problems" with stock.
The shortfall has been caused not so much by the relentless hot weather earlier, but by the 'Beast from the East' earlier in the year, as it prevented bulbs from reaching their optimum size.
It caused the bulbs to badly slow their growth, and then the weather went straight into a hot, dry spring, which also held things back further.
They are saying Daffs and Tulips are particularly hard hit because of the shortage of rain during the growing season.
Some tulips and narcissi are only half the size they should be.
One grower says instead of the normal 240,000 tonnes of narcissi in their warehouse, they only have 70,000 tonnes, and other major companies only have 50% of their crop requirements.
Bulbs seem to be available alright at the moment, but when sold, there will be problems with restocking.
So get the ones you want now, else you might be unlucky later.
