Re: Another Shooting

It’s not just the US but of course it’s the biggest place.
The Caribbean has easy access to guns too and they shoot each other but not mass killings as yet
Unless they bite the bullet ( no pun intended ) and change the gun laws these sort of killings will increase . There are a lot of mad people in the US.
In fact just warching their television programmes makes it clear that many are certifiable .

Re: Another Shooting

If we, a civilised nation, query as to why the Americans think it necessary to carry guns we are told "For protection".
A few years ago there was a report of a young girl had just bought her first car and was our for a ride, got lost and strayed onto a private road. She was confronted by a cattle grid and a notice saying "Private property" The only place she could turn round and go back was by crossing the cattle grid. As she was doing this her car was shot at and she was lucky not to get hit. Her car received several bullet holes. She was told by the police that the owner of the land she 'trespassed ' on had every right to protect his property.
Would the owner of that property have been charged with murder if this girl had been killed or let off because he was 'protecting his property'?

Possibly no different to any other country though. The difference in the US is that with the ease of access to firearms anyone who cannot control their anger, annoyance or wish for revenge is able to appease those emotions, often in an instant and final way too.

Yes, true and if we had instant access to firearms what we now see in knife crimes would possibly be shootings. Maybe not mass shootings as in the US but that may also have happened as trends in the US often reach us a few years later.

Re: Another Shooting

You may find this interesting - I certainly did.

It is the interview between Piers Morgan and Ben Shapiro debating gun laws in the USA (and the bullying tactics of Piers Morgan) after the Sandyhook massacre.

If I hear the murderers were regular drug users, I'll let you know. But the media tends to keep quiet about such information.

Re: Another Shooting

I think one problem is the sheer ease that those in the US can buy as many guns as they like.
When handguns etc were legal in the UK, you had to apply for a variation on your cert if you wanted another one. For example, if you had a Beretta 92f but also wanted a S&W .357 magnum, you had to apply for it and have it added to your cert. Variations were not always accepted. Also, the way the licencing worked, the plod knew who had guns, the number of them and what they were.
In the US, once you have the permit, you can just buy whatever you like without further applications or variations afaik.

I know one American guy on a shooting forum who has over 40 handguns and 15 rifles.
The UK laws were actually quite good / strict, but revoked due to the Police not enforcing already existing laws which saw Hungerford and Dunblane. This of course was never really made public.

Oddly enough, since handguns and certain rifles were banned in the UK, gun crime has actually risen by circa 40%.
