The fall of the (Roman) empire

Anyone who gets yesterday's Sunday Times may have read Niall Fregusons article on the fall of the Roman Empire and the comparison to Western civilisation at this moment .

The link to this article is behind a paywall so cannot be posted here unless you subscribe to The Times

Basically he describes how civilisations fall and if ever there was a time to learn from history it's today.

The decline of the Roman Empire was less a decline than a sudden and violent collapse of advanced civilisation ( they had central heating when we were still painting our faces blue)

In short Rome was invaded and sacked by barbarians .
Most of them were already there attracted by the wealth they saw there .
They also learned how to fight from the Romans themselves who had also grown rather complacent in their cosy civilisation

Recognise the situation ?

The Romans let in vast numbers of barbarians from accross their far flung empire .
And with them came death and disaster .
No doubt most of the barbarians wanted a better life just like the romans had but at the end of the day they were in fact barbarians with a different set of values to those of the complacent Romans .
Romans ( prior to the Fall of Rome ) were every it as sure as themselves as Europe is today .
Although after the atrocities in Paris most thinking people will be less sure .
So sure that Germany opened it doors to tens of thousands of Syrian refugees .
Refugees from a country that is famous for breeding terrorists .
A nice influx of young workers to support the aging rich and complacent German economy .
Already Paris has paid the price .
One of the terrorists had come on a boat to Lesbos barely a month ago .
Europe has let its defences crumble .
The Barbarians are within and there are no gates .
The Trojan horse came in long ago and its inhabitants welcomed like brothers .
Britain must act now if we want our grandchildren to live in a world that has some semblance of a liberal democracy .
Otherwise history will repeat itself .
The empire will fall destroyed by head in the sand complacency .

Unfortunately - yes - I can see the comparison - and it is scary!

A good post and well presented argument with which I fully agree.

A great post and a good comparison, but not taking the current world situation into account ... there are many differences contributing to the present state of affairs.

A very good post, the comparison is uncanny, as Silver Tabby says, it is scary, but the Trojan horse arrived long since and all anyone has done is stand around admiring it, until now!

If we are not careful, history has a tendency to repeat itself.

I think it was A J P Taylor (though I could be mistaken) who said

That men do not learn from the lessons of history is, in itself, one of the lessons of history

Re: The fall of the (Roman) empire

I'm new, came from a land were when I said much the same as this thread I was called racist and lectured upon how France is such a success story in intergration and how the children play nicely together ... Sadly Friday came and reality turned up in the way of home grown 'barbarians ' somewhat dampening the argument .people tend to call and shout down those who say anything against intergration as racist or indeed islamaphobic .. When in reality one is simply questioning other people's 'views' and understanding of the perfect world they wish to build for the future ... And as the Romans found to their cost ... The Trojan horse can in an instant bring about your own demise

Re: The fall of the (Roman) empire

The Roman Empire was built on trade, war and slavery-and they got rich but finally collapsed due to political rows and being over extended. Today the history lesson is contrast and compare that empire with the British Empire.
