Got me thinking about this Robert. Those stories of 'We were so poor' whilst hard to believe today were often close to the bone especially with Xmas approaching where even a lump of coal would have been an expensive present
We can smile now at tales such as "Our Grandad had a mint toffee and we sat on his chair arms and waited till he breathed out so we could breath in an share his minty breath.. Mam collected discarded orange peels from the market an burned em to make it smell like we had loads of fruit in our house an the neighbours always sniffed in through the letter box. We weren't posh enough to have a door though just the letterbox "
Mind you coping with poverty stiffened the backbone and put lots of hairs on ones chest which was OK for the men but a bit embarrassing for the women especially during the summer months. No Veet back then either
