Just remember someone has to win it, and it could be you.

Re: Lottery Stats

The changes..
National Lottery operator Camelot is to alter the rules of its Lotto game and says it will give players better odds of becoming a millionaire.
Changes from October include the introduction of a Millionaire's Raffle.
But mathematician David Hodge said that people would be much less likely to win any other cash prize.
This is because under the new rules, the pool of numbers that players have to choose from will increase from 49 to 59.
For example, as it stands, people choose six numbers up to 49, and the odds of winning the Lotto jackpot are just under one in 14 million.
These odds will lengthen to around one in 45 million when the new changes come in.
Increasing the number pool size will roughly halve people's current chance of getting a cash prize - apart from through the Millionaire's Raffle - said Mr Hodge, a lecturer in statistics from the University of Nottingham.
"The chance of winning something monetary is dropping by between 40% and 50%," he told the BBC.
More winners?
Camelot said the new Lotto Millionaire's Raffle "will guarantee at least two millionaires each week in addition to 20 winners of £20,000 in every draw".
Also, under the changes to the rules, players who match two numbers will win a Lucky Dip ticket for a future draw.
Camelot said this will create an "extra 1.8 million winners each week".
But Mr Hodge said that it was just the chance of having another go at the game that would increase, rather than winning a cash prize.
"Now the vast majority of your 'wins' are just winning another ticket for next week - which is just shy of a 10% chance. Sure, winning another ticket does give you another chance to win next week, but it doesn't come close to the almost halved chance each time of winning £25," he said.
However, he added that people played Lotto for different reasons.
If people played with the aim of giving money to charity, or simply for the fun of playing, they would be more likely to like the new rules, he said.
I just don't 'get' the lottery at all or why people waste money and thought on something which is unlikely to happen when they could just enjoy the here and now .

No, it won't be me. I don't gamble at all. As far as I'm concerned you can keep dreaming of winning a million bucks or so. Would it make you a happier person, or just a person with a huge bank account? Would you have less problems or more problems? Have you ever thought it right through?

Yep ta thanks

Once it was a large boat on the Med, with a sprinkle of scanty clad totty.

Now it would be a large estate with a large lake and boat house, plus a couple of cottages for staff to look after me and clean and polish the cars. One just went for £8 million, never mind.
Plus a few houses in the sunshine, a smaller boat and less scanty clad totty

Re: Lottery Stats

Why people stick to the same numbers beats me, you wouldn't back a losing horse week after week.
We always just have a lucky dip and I can honestly say the lottery costs us nothing.

If you understand the laws of probability you would understand that sticking with the same numbers has just as much chance of winning as having a lucky dip...

Unfortunately Orangutan, the laws of probability do NOT apply to commercial gambling ventures, never have and never will. Go to a casino and you WILL lose a lot of money in the medium-long run. Not because the game odds themselves favour the house but because most games are rigged in some way.

If you are a "Sheeple" then the mere contemplation that something might be rigged or someone cheating is almost unthinkable. Yet every year we here of someone else having fixed matches in sports or cheating in some other venture.

The lotto is no exception in my view. Lots and lots of ways it could be rigged. For example YOU the punter have no idea how heavy each ball is. All you see are 49 balls in a tray thrown into a machine. You never see a picture of the balls going round TOGETHER WITH the part where the ball pops out of the hole. They are always 2 separate shots.
What if one or more balls have magnetic properties and a weak magnet at the bottom of the machine keeps those close to the bottom, thereby favouring the other balls? And so on. Lots of ways to fix the lotto. Not saying IT IS rigged, just that it could easily be rigged if someone wanted it to be.

The moral of the story is not to be a punter in anything relating to money.

Re: Lottery Stats

The lottery draw is supposed to be live, but from the time a ball pops out and runs down the tube, a matter of seconds, the presenter can tell us all the stats, how many times it has been out, when it was last out, etc, how can they do that in such a short time?
