Who knows about cars?

Does anyone know why on cold frosty mornings, my car sort of screams for a couple of seconds as I first turn the ignition key?
It starts perfectly first time, every time, but not without making that awful noise as I first turn the key. It doesn't do it again, only on the first start up of the day.

Any ideas please folks?

Re: Who knows about cars?

If the screaming on begins when the engine starts, it could be worn or loose drive belts on air conditioning, fan, power steering, etc., depending on the car. This shows up often in cold weather when the belts are stiff. After a little warm up they quiet down. Could also be something else. Try to get someone to look under the hood when you give it the first start to get an idea about where it is coming from (keeping all body parts out of the way). Good luck.

Sounds like a worn and loose alternator belt, the screaming would be the belt slipping on the pulley's, no big deal, 15 min job in a garage.

Re: Who knows about cars?

You can easily check to see if the fanbelt is loose. On the longest part of the belt see how much movement there is.

See how much it deflects at the centre of the run.

If it moves more than 1/2 in. (13 mm) it is too slack - any less movement and it is too tight. Check the exact deflection recommended in the car handbook.

With a bit of luck, cats have been crawling into your engine-well overnight for warmth -
then, you scare the crap out of them by starting the engine and they scream as they get munched by all the moving bits.

Keep up the good work !

I thought it would be something to do with the starter motor.... or don't cars have them any more? ....Look at me advising, like l'm an expert mechanic!!
Mups, you'll have to use one of your stockings if it's a loose fanbelt!
