Other superstitious are often based on The Old Religions.
I never knew any of that!
This is such a good place to learn things.

So what about the 'green' question, AT? Anything spring to mind there?

Only that red is lipstick but green requires urgent medical attention?

One which could be based on fact is the 'not walking under ladders' one. If someone is working up a ladder it makes sense to walk round it rather than under - to avoid having tools etc., being dropped on your head.

But -

A really daft one from childhood - if you see an ambulance - all blues and twos - you must hold your collar until you see a dog! Lots of us arrived at 'assembly' hanging on to the pointy bits of our collars like grim death.

Who on earth thought that one up?

And why is it bad luck to step on the cracks of the pavements?
Yes, I used to do that one. Never stepped on the cracks in paving stones either. Black cats crossing your path were lucky though. Of course I'm not superstitious! Wouldn't walk under a ladder though. You never know what might fall on you.

Re: Superstitions!

One - not sure if strictly speaking it's a superstition, thing is to never name a child the same as a close relative. It's supposed to bring early death to one of them.

Again not sure if it's a superstition but it's commonplace for the old babushkas to regularly be seen spitting three times. When? Well if someone says something nice about someone it's to persuade evil things not to bother bringing bad luck on the basis that they can't be that nice. Same with new mothers.

Oy vey! Wot a beeeoootiful baby!

(Mother discreetly goes "pft pft pft) Why thank you Mrs Cohen!"

Another thing, more a custom is to at a funeral to wish a surviving relative a long life. In so many words. Once again a blessing to counter things evil.

Re: Superstitions!

How about the number 13?

There are many who will not accept 13 at a dinner table, etc etc etc.

Based on there being 13 at the Last Supper and the betrayal of the big J by the little J. Kiss of death and all that.
