Olympic Torch

What are your feeling on the Olympic Torch. ?

I am fed up of hearing about it.
Now after them being used, they are being sold on ebay. It's not to bad if the money goes to charity, but does it.

How much money is this costing the tax payer. Ordinary people cannot even afford to go and watch the Olympics.
Do you think that the country will get back what has been spent having the Olympics here?
Are we all going to be paying for them for some time after it's all over.

Re: Olympic Torch

Hi Shaz I am not a 'sporty person' but have been impressed with the progress of the torch and those chosen to carry it frequently people who have overcome adversity some of them very young

The torch went through Malvern today, it was packed with people and 2012 balloons I couldn't go because I was baby sitting at that time but I am proud that the people of my adopted county Worcestershire gave the torch bearers a good reception

Re: Olympic Torch

Given that its a relay I don't see why anyone gets to keep a torch. If they didn't there would not be this issue of selling them on ebay etc

I agree with you completely Shaz. I didn’t suppose there was only me that is already sick to death of the Olympics! Having said that though, I was sick of hearing about the whole thing as soon as that pompous oaf Lord Coe started the process to bring the games here! And why would we want them here anyway, the only reason I can see that they are held at all now is to massage huge egos, feed political vanity and provide a life of immense privilege for the few. There doesn’t appear to be any trace of the Olympic ideal now, just big business, even bigger egos and absolutely huge wage packets for the “elite”.
Just as an example, this current ridiculous spectacle of the torch relay is so full of the Olympic spirit that some of the participants cannot wait to put their kit on ebay straight afterwards to cash in. The Olympics these days are continued just for the benefit of the elite, some of whom spend their whole careers on one continuous first class junket at the expense of us taxpayers, and who deign to throw us “common people” a few crumbs occasionally to make us feel included, such as this ridiculous torch relay, to somehow offset the fact that although we have funded the whole shebang, 99% of us will never be able to get a ticket to see any of the “spectacle” even if we wanted to!
And don’t even get me started on the proposed mind numbing overdose of television coverage….

Well said Plantman. I agree with you, and I think Seb.Coe is becoming more like Uriah Heep every day? I can't stand the smarmy little toad.

Re: Olympic Torch

As with the Olympics in general I think it a complete and utter waste of time and money. Even if the torch was passing our door I wouldn't bother to make the effort to view it.

Is this a first??? - not often we agree Barry but in this I wholeheartedly agree. Like you I became bored with the whole Olympic thing when they announced the result of the 'hosting' city some 6 - 7 years ago. I can't be asked who will or won't win a medal and furthermore, don't give stuff if they do or don't.

Am also 'bored' with Eurovision too and couldn't be bothered less if the UK received 'Null point'.
