Advice please on India trip

I am going on the Golden Triangle Indian Tour. I am not sure whether I need a rabies immunisation. The decision seems to be a personal one. Can anyone who has been there please advise. Many thanks.

I spent a year in India and never had a rabies injection, nor was I bitten by a dog or a monkey.

Mind you that was in the days when a smallpox injection was compulsory.

You might find this helpful

We spent 6 weeks in India some years ago, we didnīt have rabies vaccinations, but if I was going there again I would most definitely consider having it.

Re: Advice please on India trip

There are a lot of stray animals - cats, dogs, pigs and cows - wandering in the bazaars - so it may be worth a Rabies shot.

Remember to pack some comfortable shoes - not all the roads/pavements are properly maintained.

You might want to invest in a mosquito net as well - just in case there is not one provided where you stay.

Don't be tempted by the 'street food' !

Other than that - enjoy your trip and have fun.

Disagree with that, Street food is the best food to try. I eat it all over Asia it is great, much the best food.

If you are worried stick to the cooked food from stalls.

Yes it may well be but, surely it depends upon hygiene?

I always look at where the food is prepared, cooked and served....if that seems to pass my pretty low requirements then away we go.

When I went I stayed pretty much with veg dishes but if I saw shwarma on the menu...that was it....heaven.

Like choosing a restaurant to dine at....look where the locals go....thats the best indicator of quality.

As you said...."street food is the best to try"...I'd add the quality of food is far better than any restaurant.

Re: Advice please on India trip

Hi

India is not safe, particularly for female travellers.

Do not go off the beaten track and most definitely do not use a Taxi unless there are a bunch of you.

I travelled widely in SE Asia and I have to agree about the Street Food.

Eat where the locals eat, not where the Tourists eat.

The locals do not poison their own, they would soon be out of business.

Travelling is great fun, just a few simple precautions.

If you look at the cost of your holiday and compare it to the cost of your rabies vaccination it really is peanuts.

I was fortunate in that I had vaccinations against rabies and loads of other things as part of my job, so did not have to pay.

Apart from the diseases, there's also the inevitable 'trots'. A few weeks before we went to India, we took probiotic capsules every day. We were in a group of fourteen people on the tour and we were the only couple that were not affected. Coincidence maybe but we did all have the same food.

I'm quite envious, you will love it, especially the Taj Mahal.
