The early balti and curry houses used to make it in exactly the same way. Most authentic curries have very little sauce and the British public didn't particularly like the curries like that authentic or not. The story goes that a customer wanted a bit more liquid in his curry and the chef had the bright idea of sticking a tin of tomato soup into the customer's curry. The idea took off and was copied and repeated everywhere else.
