I was always aware of the geographical terms 'British Isles', 'Great Britain' and 'Ireland', and the political terms 'United Kingdom', 'England', 'Scotland', 'Wales' and 'Northern Ireland' (and 'Republic of Ireland').
However, I never thought about the term 'British Islands' though, of course, that would include the three offshore islands which are not part of the UK but possess an element of self-government.
Talking of which, someone earlier mentioned the Isle of Wight which is an offshore island though, of course, not possessing any means of self-government.
I know it used to be part of Hampshire at one time, but I'm not sure now whether it's a county in its own right now. Someone from the IoW will know!
