Hang on, just had a thought: why do we have "Team GB"? This is the brand name of our Olympics team which covers Great Britain and Northern Ireland. NI isn't in Great Britain - it should be "Team UK"

Or, change the Venn diagram. Probably cheaper

No, you'd have to slice NI off the island of Ireland and stick it onto Great Britain. Because Great Britain literally means the 'great' island of the British Isles. Ireland is the lesser island, and the Isle of Mann, Jersey and Guernsey are the small islands. It wouldn't be cheaper, it would be physically impossible

Perhaps we could draw a little dotted path to denote a tunnel

That's an excellent diagram. Thanks. I've saved it.

I was always aware of the geographical terms 'British Isles', 'Great Britain' and 'Ireland', and the political terms 'United Kingdom', 'England', 'Scotland', 'Wales' and 'Northern Ireland' (and 'Republic of Ireland').

However, I never thought about the term 'British Islands' though, of course, that would include the three offshore islands which are not part of the UK but possess an element of self-government.

Talking of which, someone earlier mentioned the Isle of Wight which is an offshore island though, of course, not possessing any means of self-government.
I know it used to be part of Hampshire at one time, but I'm not sure now whether it's a county in its own right now. Someone from the IoW will know!

Anyway, the op has shown a lovely Venn diagram. If I still taught in school, I'd have it up as a poster.
Not to me Dex......

The Isle of Man is a corrupt crap hole.

A very pretty place but populated by very ugly people. I very nearly lost a considerable amount of money there because of their supposed bank government overlooking when Kaupthing Singer & Friedlander (Isle of Man) went to the wall.
