I know i'm an oddball.......

.......but it's really difficult if you just don't like butter or marg.

Most shop bought sandwiches have it. Lots of potato topped pies have it. Buffets at parties have it on the sandwiches. Cakes have it on their butter icing topping. The list is endless

Is there anyone out there, like me, who doesn't like butter or marg?

I can taste it instantly. When I go to a friend's house and they have sandwiches, I always have my own individual portion, made up with it.

It makes me feel like a nuisance sometimes. Seems trivial, but it's a buttery world

Have you tried clarified butter? You might prefer the taste.

Also, different butters can vary in taste (you can't beat homemade) - I buy the unpasterurised butter from Waitrose, and clarify it because I am lactose intolerant.

If you clarify it, just make sure you don't let it boil - as that will alter the taste.

I forgot to add, butter is very good for you. It contains butyric acid, and is one of the best dietary sources of it. Butyric acid is a short-chain fatty acid, which is a powerful immune factor and excellent for gut health.

Azz it's a thing I believe I was born with. I've never eaten it. Two of my sons have. My youngest son is like me. He hates the taste. It's one of the foods in life that is in so many things. So, i know I'm the oddball It's nothing to do with fat or calories, it's just the taste. I hate it. I'm definitely in the minority.

You are not alone alice76, there's at least one other - my son! He has never had it either and all his sandwiches were with dry bread. It does make life difficult.....he's turned 40 now and still the same.

Re: I know i'm an oddball.......

When my son was born he was rushed off to an isolation hospital in Sheffield at just 1 day old, complete with flashing lights ambulance and police escort. It transpired that he was born without the enzyme that deals with lactose. He was put on a food called Velactin, which was vile, it looked and smelt like water that potatoes had boiled into. For the next two years it was in and out of Sheffield childrens hospital, he couldnīt have milk or anything that contained milk. It got better as he got older and now, like me, the worst it does is cause bloating and upset stomach if too much food containing lactose is eaten or drunk. In my case I dislike butter and margarine and never put either on my toast or sandwich, the only milk I use is fully skimmed and that only on cereals or for cooking. If, as I do on occasion, have a little cream or ice cream it is only when in quick and easy reach of a toilet, believe me it really does work that fast. However this past couple of years our supermarkets have a really good range of lactose free milk, cheese and other products. The only cream I ever buy is Elm Lea which is none dairy and for me it is wonderful.

A nice way of making sandwiches without dairy is the Spanish way, a little olive oil with tomato rubbed over, itīs really very nice.
