Always sow my Parsnips in early Feb think they need the time as are slow germinators, only drawback is they are more prone to Clanker.

There is a Girl on the allotment who sows hers in August as she prefers Baby Parsnips.

Well how would you feel if sown in freezing cold soil??

Never mind the `lore`-sow seeds when the soil is ready.

Re: Allotment

We still have snow here where I live in Cumbria, so even though I'm itching to get out there and do some gardening I will have to bide my time until the soil thaws out.
I don't have a greenhouse but do have an electric seed propagator so I will just have to content myself with getting seed sown ready for the warmer weather.

Re: Allotment

With only a tiny back yard plot, I start all my seeds indoors in small pots. I keep them covered with plastic wrap till they've germinated, then keep them on a South facing windowsill until planting out time. I've done it this way for years; fine for someone with very limited space.

Re: Allotment

Walked round the allotment I am on to day.

Top soil down to 1 inch is very dry and some people where watering as they sowed there sets.

I dont grow peas because to many bugs, did see that people that do have them about 3 inches above ground already.

Everybody is planting Main Crop, I will wait another week.

Weeds are showing signs of growth.

Re: Allotment

I'm getting some tomato seeds today and I'll get them sown, . . I'll keep them in the warm house on the windowsill, I shall have to make the lean-to a bit bigger this year.

Re: Allotment

I always start mine on St. Patricks Day: tomatoes, basil, hot peppers. Borlotti beans and onions outside later when the soil is warmer.
