1,700-Year-Old Roman Mosaic Discovered

Construction workers upgrading the Roman sewer system in the ruins of Lod, have discovered a 1,700 year-old mosaic depicting various scenes of hunting and pastoral life. The extensive and detailed mural is thought to have served as the living room floor in a villa of a luxurious and affluent neighbourhood during the Roman and Byzantine periods. It covers an area of almost 180 square meters and is composed of coloured stonework that has been protected for centuries. The intricate pieces are of high quality and display artistic talent. Archaeologists claim that more of the complex may still lay hidden underneath the busy city streets, and that new discoveries may still come.

A time when they were capable of both great cruelty and amazing civilization.

Imagine how much time that must have taken to create.

What is even more astonishing is that they have survived the troubles. You do rather wish that they had left them safely covered until better times. So sad when beautiful things like these can so easily be destroyed.

No doubt it will be lazer mapped so it can be rebuilt but somehow that could never be the same as touching this original work

Thanks for posting this. All quite interesting, indeed ! In my spare time I spend much time investigating and studying past civilizations
As one studies the past one realizes that these civilizations were very highly evolved. For some reason what they knew remained a prevy for the few.

So knowledge must always remain open and free. If not, it runs the risk of disappearing overtime.

Re: 1,700-Year-Old Roman Mosaic Discovered

Roman History and archaeology is fascinating

To think all those years ago. They were very civilised and able to make and build fantastic things without all the modern equipment we use today.

I recently watched a programme about Pompei, and the mummified bodies who perished when Vesuvius erupted
Even then they had tradesmen Carpenters Stone masons Bakers Jewellers and other trades and Banks, lots of culture as well

They did not think the human body was indecent, and depicted it on the many walls including pictures of a sexual nature. Not hidden, it was there for all to see, and an education for young men and women as part of life.

No one feinted when they saw them
A very healthy attitude
