I've been to baby showers where this happens...I just pay up but I have to admit seeing the present at the same time as the mum to be takes away the pleasure of giving.

I would pay up Arty if I had agreed to go...its how they seem to do it these days...I agree though it's a bit cheeky asking.

This wasn’t a recent thing it happened in April.
When l thought about how much it would cost me on the train to get there and pay for drinks too. I couldn’t warrant the cost. Besides, l only give £10 each to my children and grandchildren on their birthdays. (I give them more at Christmas!)

I have a feeling many invited, backed off. When l saw the photos of the party, l was glad l didn’t go, it looked like they were at a wake!
