Re: Roberts Poems (part 3)
A True Story
I went to see the doc
cos I had a pain or two
He said tis hearts that’s failing
And my ECG machine is too!
Ya best get down to A and E
As fast as feet can carry
And once I got in that big machine
Didn’t know if I was bert or harry
I lay upon a trolley from early morn to eve
They needled me, ‘tached wires
And gave tabs to suck which eased
I was visited by an army
Assessed by all each time
And finally they said
You’re on the move in line
I watched the corridors rush by
Flew in to lifts and smiled
We were playing the game that they all knew
But wouldn’t mention why
And now a private room at last
Well one without a door
So the nurse upon the console
Could easily hear me snore
The system kept on ticking
As each team breezed in and out
No one ever shook my hand
They spoke in whispers through side of mouth!
And then she came in smiling
Looked me straight into the eye
Said “ I know what you’re in need of
A good shower will make you fly”
I walked into the shower
With my trolley and tubes attached
She was right I was a new man
I was upright and relaxed
And finally the chieftain came
With his scurrying minion cloud
“This man has no bad heart,
Let’s move him out to browse!”
So back on trolley for one last ride
And convalescent room
A few more tests and home at last
But with no diagnostic tune
As I sat at home recouping
I chatted to medic friend of mine
And then I recalled I had had shingles
Some many moons back in time
That’s it we said with fever
It’s mimicked heart attack
Just take the codeine tabs my lad
And we’ll soon have you back
The moral of this story
And there is one I can tell
Don’t count on machines and pc’s
Remember your hands you trained so well!
