What a parent!
By Di Lymbury · · From Pic of the Week
This magpie parent was sheltering its young during a deluge in a recent storm. I have recently heard that birds are more intelligent than we give them credit for. I am beginning to believe it!

A graceful flight
By Di Lymbury · · From Pic of the Week
Slowed shutter speed to capture the grace of the movement of this huge flock of corellas arriving each day to feed on the pine nuts.

Byron Bay super moon
By Rod Evans · · From Pic of the Week
Tonight's super moon rising beside the Byron Lighthouse.
I captured this from a hillside about 5kms away using a 1300mm lens (at f/16). Not the cleanest image but still shows the moon's superness.

Reflective pelicans
By Paul Bainton · · From Pic of the Week
Like many places in eastern Australia, Canberra has been experiencing unusually hot weather in the past weeks with quite few days around 40 degrees.
As I was riding around Lake Burley Griffin I came across this image on a hot summer’s day. It looked like the birds were cooling their feet in the water. This was a timely reminder for me that animals like people need cool places.

Rarely seen
By jay h · · From Pic of the Week
Only on 40 degree plus days have I ever been lucky enough to see these huge flies. My first time in the early 1980's at Waikerie in the Riverland.
Every time the temperature has been excessive, I'm not sure if they are trying to cool down by the water, or become active in these conditions?
I have only seen perhaps two dozen in 40 years. Usually they will buzz you whilst sitting in the shade of a red gum on the riverbank and they look like a giant wasp, with their red ass and black torso, so you tend to freak out a bit.
The last couple of years , on REALLY hot days. I've had a couple come into my shed on the edge of the bush.
This time I snapped one although not quite as I would have liked as they only sit still for seconds, if at all.

Resilience
By Di Lymbury · · From Pic of the Week
This tree is certainly resilient but one of our group, who suffered horrific leg injuries in a car accident and more recently a savage bite on her leg from a wild cat, is also extremely resilient. She walks every day without fail and is on the way back to climbing mountains in more ways than one. I am amazed she was able to climb up Yellow Pinch Track, a walk with some very steep sections, to share this wonderful view. I think her medical team will also share my amazement. Human nature is wonderfully resilient.

Pure Paronella Magic
By Shaan · · From Pic of the Week
Conversations with Richard Fidler is what drove us to see Paronella Park. The amazing story of Jose Paronella and his migration to Australia; his vision of the castle in the bush. Listening to the story then finally getting to see his creation was the highlight of our holiday. Doing all the tours and seeing the story come to life was simply amazing.
