If yours is original, it might be worth a great deal more than a few bob!

Re: What is this?

It has occurred to me that, assuming the brass knob on the front/lid attached to the string is detachable, this would hang down and would be visible (when opened) through the small hole. This would indicate that the sundial is sitting perfectly horizontally which, of course, would be essential for a correct reading of time.

One of the almost identical items on pinterest is described as a sundial with compass and 32 point wind rose.

Ah yes! A traditional compass rose, before they considered the use of degrees.

But going back to the images provided, what would be the point of adjusting that pointer to indicate a compass point?

You'd have to ask a 17th century mariner that. Or Google. Me, I'd just use the GPS.

Re: What is this?

GBR and Ray, thanks for the links. That would explain a lot to me with the 32 wind compass.
Now the the next question would be, what is the string on the top for? It is not attached to the string inside. Also it is fixed to the centre of the top and can be wound around the little ‘stud’ on the top.
JBR. If ten Bob is your final offer, no deal.😀

As I suggested, it could be detached, hang down weighted by the brass knob (detachable?) and viewed through the little window to check that the unit is sitting perfectly horizontally. If not, the indicated time would be inaccurate, perhaps wildly.

OK, I'll up my offer to a fiver.
