Have you made embarrassing typos?
Or sent or received messages using predictive text, causing confusion?
OMG Sweetie pie, I will never forget the worst typo I ever made. It was when I was working in a secretarial pool of six girls for a very prestigious head office in Jermyn Street London. I had to type and send a report to B.P. Petroleum Head Office to be presented to the Board Members at an important meeting. The report was 32 pages long and none of the other secretaries were available at the time to check it through with me, so I carefully checked the handwritten against my carefully (or so I thought!) typed version, waiting to be faxed through to BP.
All went well and the report duly despatched. I was just sitting there with a well-earned cup of coffee and a biscuit, feeling a sense of achievement, when my boss barrelled into my office with a face like thunder! Mary, what on earth have you done? he said, I couldn't even speak as I hadn't done anything other than what I was told. "Did you check the documents before sending them?" he asked me, "Yes" said I, "Take a look at what you typed on page 7" he said. I looked and went bright red. I had typed the following.
" and although the Count is important, we can ignore this"
But I had missed out the 'o' in the word 'Count'.
Mortified is an understatement!! Every B.P. board member had seen it. My boss was definitely not a happy bunny at the time, although he did see the funny side of it when he later calmed down.
I've never forgotten it, even though it was more than 40 years ago.
