When we were gone astray

Just heard God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen on the telly, got me singing it to myself.

There's a line: When we were gone astray. Got me thinking, looking back, did I ever go astray? Hmmm ... I guess my parents may have thought so. But I was not aware of it at the time.

Be honest, let's hear your "astray" moments.

There was a vicar living behind us.

He was also a magistrate!

He had a nice orchard, plenty of apples.

"Chudding" was very popular.

Got caught often, but not fined.

Other than that, racing snails, across the road, was fun!

It was so boringly quiet that the snails, usually, made it across!

Girls became interesting, during summer, as they came to the seadide on holiday!

Re: When we were gone astray

The most astray I ever went was on surfing trips down South West coast when I was a teenager. It was the end of school and that "gap" time that you might be lucky enough to have before work or further study. These days they call it "schoolies" And it involves expensive hotels and clubbing on the GOld Coast. Then it was just taking off in what ever beat old heap that would fit a few surf boards and us. And very few bucks. Sleeping on beaches, drinking cheap beer and smoking any local weed we could get our hands on was where the "astraying" usually started. It ended up with being chased away by either red neck locals or surf gangs or the local cops. IF you were lucky it was the cops. All we wanted to do was surf and have a good..peaceful.. time but there was always somebody that wanted to turn us into criminals. We never detstroyed anything, trashed any shops, harrassed the locals girls (we didn;t have to. They loved us or anybody else. But we still were "astray" in the eyes of many. That's about it. I have been a model citizen ever since. I expect my canonisation will occur no more than a couple of decades after my passing.

Hi

The oldest of 8 I became an excellent Poacher to feed the famply.

Dad did not earn serious money until later in life.

I had to miss Uni to earn money for te family.

It gives you the work ethic and a respect for those who do hard jobs.

I have the highest respect for cleaners who really do earn their money.

I have no respect at all for Estate Agents and Solicitors.

Yes, I would guess that many of us would remember the years between, say, being 15 and ,later, getting settled down, as being the best years of our lives.

Little money, but it didn't matter, no fancy techical stuff, but it didn't matter, plenty of new experiences, that mattered!

If there's an afterlife and the astray times need paying for, I could be in the naughty room for some time.
