Re: Pocket money as a kid.

I had chores round the house and got sixpence for it, then when I was 9 I went to work with granddad in the evenings helping him clean offices. At 12 I had my own cleaning job I would guess you wouldn't be allowed to do that these days.

I didn't have regular chores but mum would ask me to help around the house sometimes but Dad insisted I washed his car once a week - he would give me a ten shilling note for doing a good job

My brother used to go to the local golf course and collect 'lost balls' for which the golf club would pay him.

Neither of us had a paid job until we left school though.

Well from 12 had two paper rounds, went tattie picking, chopped sticks for firewood, and took pop bottles back for the 3p deposit. Pocket money was usually a threepeny bit ( proper money ) and later a tanner 6p. Spent my ill gotten gains on clothes using my mothers Kays catalogue.

When I was a kid, girls weren't allowed to deliver newspapers. We didn't get an allowance. We would go and find empty soda bottles and take them to the store for a few pennies to buy candy.
I also did babysitting and would iron clothes or clean people's houses for a few dollars to buy my school clothes.
