There is a word to describe feeling that one has to reply to a thing out of concern that if one doesn't respond to a thing it might appear that one agrees with it when one doesn't. The problem is that I'm buggered if I can remember what it is or even if it's a word not encountered in English! A bit like schadenfreude which has no direct English equivalent.
I think that’s when “ choice” comes into it....
