Descaling kettles.

Great cheap tip.
Instead of paying for products to descale your kettle. Put a little water in the kettle, added a good squirt of lemon juice then boiled it up. When emptied all the scale is soft and can be washed out with a brush or cloth. Brilliant. So pleased with my idea.

Maureen I usually use vinegar and leave it in overnight I guess it works much the same as lemon juice.

I use white vinegar use it for the shower head and to buff up my sink and draining board too. Works well in my iron and the coffee machine too.

I line the bottom of the kettle with water then pour white vinegar on top to fill kettle halfway. Let it sit for half hour then rinse out - fill halfway with water and par boil - job done

One denture tablet popped in the kettle with warm water... sparkling clean

Yes I have done that too I prefer the vinegar as it doesn't contain bleach. Love bleach but don't want it in my kettle or iron.

Vinegar contains ascetic acid though and is a corrosive.

That is why it works isn't, most over the counter descalers contain ascetic acid .

As the item being treated is not left in contact with the vinegar very long it doesn't really have time to corrode . Most modern kettles don't live long enough to corrode anyway

I use white vinegar to descale both my kettle and steamer, it works a treat

It does - no need to use it neat either a little water with it works a treat
