The timer is electronic you can set the oven to come on at a set time and cook for a set period, if you turn on the oven it automatically lights and after several seconds the flame rises , the timer cannot be set by mistake ( as far as I know) as say a separate control knob could be left on, it is an LCD screen and there are no indicators showing that anything has been set.
