What's better....fat free or full fat dairy products

I believe that full fat products are generally better for you as low fat tend to have higher sugar content. However I have just been told I have high cholesterol and some literature says I should eat low fat products. So unsure which is better....any thoughts?

I agree with you Cindy, its like these Weighwatchers meals, they cut out all the fat, so its so bland to taste, but add lots of sugar.

Morning Cindy, or whatever time it is in Aus.....
Your Liver is largely responsible for adjusting your Cholesterol level, and what you eat has very little effect (about 10%) Also, having high Cholesterol does not necessarily mean it's too high. Cholesterol is made up of many parts but the three main ones are LDL - HDL and triglycerides. LDL and tryglycerides are the bad stuff (sticky) but HDL is the good stuff and prevents the sticky stuff from adhering to your arteries. So high levels of HDL are preferable but this could reflect in an overall high reading. Make sure you check the levels of each individual component before deciding that your Cholesterol is too high.

HDL should be over 1 mmol/L
Triglycerides below 1.7 mmol/L
and by dividing your overall score by your HDL score you will arrive at what's called 'The Ratio' and this should be below 4.

Cholesterol does quite a few important jobs around the body, it's not just there to give you Heart Attacks and Strokes.....

Good post OGF.

All I know is when I went on a low carb diet, it involved eating a lot of high fats which resulted in my cholesterol going down.

I have full fat everything, you need some fat in your body to cushion your brain and major organs.
I wouldn’t eat anything low fat as l feel what they lack in fat is replaced by something worse ie. chemicals.

Absolutely without a doubt, full fat for the reasons Art supplied but also because the less fat you eat, the more fat you gain because the body hangs onto it for vital body processes. Foods that are limited in fat are almost always over compensated with more sugar and extra fillings which are usually preservatives , which Art mentioned. Yep. Educated people here.

Arty, you are spot on and I agree with you. I used to eat low fat everything and I got fatter. Plus I miss out on the good stuff like butter and cream, etc.

OldGreyFox....great post....very informative, thanks

BrattiYou also have a very informative post there. I love hearing about things that have to do with becoming healthier as I plan on living to be 100 years old and I want to be active the whole time..... (with purple and silver hair)

I'm a full fat girl too.
I take Lecithin to break down the fat.
