I can remember them when I was at school in the 50s two families in particular both large , ragged village children with impetigo.

I was a kid in London at the time this was set. The general ambience portrayed is great - basic food, hardly any heating, life being simpler. But the people in everyday life were rarely as twee & sweet as the bunch on there, they'd just come out of a war & were pretty traumatised.. they were nothing like as polite, especially to kids, everyone and anyone thought they had a right to whop you at any point - teachers, parents, cops. Authorities and hierarchies were rigid - discipline was everywhere, there was little sympathy for anyone who stepped out of line. I do enjoy the series but they're definitely looking thru rose tinted glasses.
