Re: Poland & Hungary Threaten Veto to EU Stimulus Package

And it's official: both Hungary and Poland veto the EU budget - all because the EU powers want to bully member nations into obediance.

Dombrovskis is saying that resolution must be quick - what?
In the EU?
That domineering disparate bunch that are so glacially slow with everything that really matters are incapable of being quick unlessit's to introduce yet another completely unnecessary regulation - like insisting that VAT is payable on women's sanitary products and on power.

Yes. Dissent seems to be spreading within the EU.

Surely it isn't just coincidence that it started when we decided to leave!

Re: Poland & Hungary Threaten Veto to EU Stimulus Package

Besides the budget the EU has unresolved problems, often long-standing, with:

* Migration (no more needs saying.)
* CAP reform.
* A climate agenda and meeting climate promises.
* Poor performance with emerging technologies - a great example being that the EU has no Google alternative; no Facebook alternative; no Amazon alternative; etc. etc. etc. - and (worse) current policies do not encourage such innivation within the EU.
* Tackling the recession post-covid: the EU has been slower to recover than others (including the UK) in the past & policies haven't changed enough to suggest that this time around will be any different.
* Corruption. A longstanding issue with the EU, the Eastern European members have seen corruption there highlighted along with the sale of EU passports/citizenship in various members, cross-border vat fraud and much more.
* An increasing East/West and even North/South divide(s) seeing factions (like Hungary & Poland) joining forces to influence EU policymaking and decisions.

There's lots more too but - well - I don't want to start people seeing my posts and immediately going "TLDR".
For those genuinely interested you could do worse than look into the Euro and how banking in the EU is doing.

No, the EU isn't about to implode (though who knows? It might.) - but so many problems just keep being kicked down the road which cannot be put off forever.
Something has to give, before long too I suspect.
So I think we will see major reforms within the EU before much longer.

Good job you are leaving if they are starting to penalise countries that are not democratic.

Hi

We are no longer members of the EU so nothing to do with us.

Time to concentrate on our own problems.

How do you get that the penalised countries aren't democratic?
Both Poland and Hungary are doing what their voters are asking them to do.

The point of the EU is that members should agree upon whatever, no?
Isn't that what a "union" means?
NOT that they should bully those that do not agree into submission.

The EU have done that in a more subtle way for decades (as in Ireland being asked to vote on the Lisbon Treaty multiple times or Denmark with the Maastricht Treaty) and now this overt stance has backfired on them.
What happens next is going to be very interesting.

It is to do with us though; it clearly demonstrates the EU's capacity for coercion.
Just like they are trying with the UK now regarding a deal to leave - which, be honest, is more than a little ridiculous.
Imagine needing permission to leave and carry on trading like we did for centuries before the EU was ever a "thing".

You don't see such actions further promoting a split within the EU either I suppose?
You know, like the split which led us to leaving after Cameron tried for reforms and was sent away by the EU with a flea in his ear.
