Bananas

For as long as I can remember, I've always bought bananas. I like to have one every day and always buy them at the green stage for ripening at home.

But lately I struggle with getting them just at the 'right' time before they get to that horrible soft sticky sweet stage. The skin can be at the right looking yellow stage, but the inside says differently.

I seem to end up binning more than I eat.

I buy them at the supermarket, rather than the greengrocers, and wondered if it's because they've sweated in the boxes covered over with plastic that's affecting them.

Re: Bananas

Greengrocers would be best I think cos they usually buy fresh from the market very early mornings. My wife has a banana every morning to keep her potassium up.

Re: Bananas

Some bananas are tasteless . I was in Thailand many years ago backpacking , I used to buy the most delicious bananas , very tiny , but real ones freshly picked . Our bananas are forced and tasteless.

Re: Bananas

I have eaten bananas in Egypt (on Banana Island) which were small and slightly mushy but delicious.

What I can't stand is those stupid green ones that supermarkets sell.

Probably to do with how you are storing your bananas Pesta.

Are they in a bowl with other fruit for example?

Re: Bananas

Yes realist is right, if you store your bananas with other fruit in a bowl, then they will ripe very quickly.

I love bananas, but unfortunately I can't eat them as they put my sugar levels up to high, but I do my them for my MIL from Asda, I pick loose one's and make sure that they are slightly green when I buy them.

Re: Bananas

I don't think some bananas taste that good these days, even when ripe they have an odd texture.

The little ones seem better than the bigger ones, I buy the little Caribbean ones from Waitrose.

Because I rarely eat meat these days and have 'porridge fruit and nut' only days when fruit is plentiful (part of the 5-2 eating regime ) I can justify paying a bit more .
