There are plenty on the market ... Tesco, Argos have some good inexpensive ones but avoid Dyson .. he is a conman multi millionaire who has made his fortune by selling ridiculously high priced junk !....IMO of course
Malcolm, I've had my Dyson Animal for over 6 years and it has to be the best vacuum I've ever used. How can you tell people to avoid them just because you don't like them?
I love my very old Hoover Junior, the one with the paper liner within a cloth bag. You can still buy reconditioned ones. The new uprights carrying their own tools are sooo heavy !!

Mum had one and it was superb but it wouldn't do our semi-shag carpet
This is what I now have and it's so simple.
The cord winds back into the machine too. If there are cats' hairs on my Saudi rugs, I use a Velcro brush on them (do them by hand) or sometimes the crevice tool with the machine.
I love my Dyson and wouldn't have anything else.
It cleans both hard floors and carpets beautifully .
I exchanged my ancient Dyson for a newer small lighter version a couple of years ago so I can lift it up and down stairs easily and am very pleased with it .
We always have dyson's the ball this time , although it took a bit of getting used to , good suction & if you have any problems you can ring the help line up , they also do a good service it comes back like new again ...
