Re: Leisurely Scribbles (part 5)

It's easy to fight when everything's right,
And you're mad with the thrill and the glory;
It's easy to cheer when victory's near,
And wallow in fields that are gory.
It's a different song when everything's wrong,
When you're feeling infernally mortal;
When it's ten against one, and hope there is none,
Buck up, little soldier, and chortle:

Carry on! Carry on!
There isn't much punch in your blow.
You're glaring and staring and hitting out blind;
You're muddy and bloody, but never you mind.
Carry on! Carry on!
You haven't the ghost of a show.
It's looking like death, but while you've a breath,
Carry on, my son! Carry on!

And so in the strife of the battle of life
It's easy to fight when you're winning;
It's easy to slave, and starve and be brave,
When the dawn of success is beginning.
But the man who can meet despair and defeat
With a cheer, there's the man of God's choosing;
The man who can fight to Heaven's own height
Is the man who can fight when he's losing.

Carry on! Carry on!
Things never were looming so black.
But show that you haven't a cowardly streak,
And though you're unlucky you never are weak.
Carry on! Carry on!
Brace up for another attack.
It's looking like hell, but -- you never can tell:
Carry on, old man! Carry on!

There are some who drift out in the deserts of doubt,
And some who in brutishness wallow;
There are others, I know, who in piety go
Because of a Heaven to follow.
But to labour with zest, and to give of your best,
For the sweetness and joy of the giving;
To help folks along with a hand and a song;
Why, there's the real sunshine of living.

Carry on! Carry on!
Fight the good fight and true;
Believe in your mission, greet life with a cheer;
There's big work to do, and that's why you are here.
Carry on! Carry on!
Let the world be the better for you;
And at last when you die, let this be your cry:
Carry on, my soul! Carry on!

Re: Leisurely Scribbles (part 5)

Or,from the other point of view;

Oh shit,the fight has started
It's time we all departed;
If we win we're just boasting
if we lose we're for toasting
either way,our government's hard-hearted.

No-one'll care that you faced incoming fire
just to ignore you,that's the govt's desire;
when the shit hits the fan
the gov't,to a man,
will find reasons not to let you retire.

They'll find loopholes in your service pension plan
Your medals? Oh,just shove'em in the can.
You faced the IRA,now they're finished [aren't they?]
Now we've returned to where it began.

Oh,let's build a wall across Ireland
THAT'LL sort the wheat from the chaff!
'Peace in our time'
...well,it's quite a nice rhyme,
but the idea behind it is naff.

My mates lost their lives protecting
self-important liars like these.
Now we who remain
live with the pain
of knowing,you just can't beat sleaze.

Nice one Pug, and so true, the ordinary soldier faces all the danger then is soon forgotten, while the politicians stay safe and reap their hefty pensions.

Re: Leisurely Scribbles (part 5)

I think Sidney James was Willie the Kid Sweetie. they sure had very suggestive names for their characters.
Did you know Sid was a South African? Now whoever I’d bet on to be a true cockney lad my money would have been on him, how wrong can you be.
63 he was when he kicked the bucket, but then he always looked 63, his mug never changed, he had a well lived in face, lord rest him.
I believe he was a heavy gambler.
I loved him in films, a great character.
Jim Dale used to be a pop Singer before going into acting, he composed and sang a lot of songs in his day, his best song in my opinion was recorded by the Seekers, the thyme song to the film “Georgy Girl”

The Carry On films were good for a laugh in the old days, but now they are played to death on ITV, every bank holiday weekend, every Christmas, every Easter, every time they need to fill in a space in the schedule they stick on a Carry On film. That’s a shame because overplay ruins them.
When the "News of the World” was out they gave away free Carry On CD’s every week. I have the whole set of them. The scenes and jokes are not funny anymore when you’ve heard and seen them so many times before.
Time to “Carry Off” the lot of them methinks, or at least give them a few years rest from the TV screen.

Re: Leisurely Scribbles (part 5)

Thanks for the kind words re my hasty attempt at a poem,Jem.
I apologise if it seems a bit deflationary-but too many of my oppos,with whom I faced all kinds of cr4p the politicians started then stayed WELL away from -including their offspring/immediate family- and today,we're just an inconvenience to them. Mick-the-Devil & Scattercash McArthy were talking about this very thing with me just a couple of weeks ago. Both served alongside me in various places in which politics/interference had brought death,destruction,misery,life-changing injuries,mind-shredding violence...and both say the same as I do;i.e. we are NOT wanted/valued/respected or appreciated for the sh1t we faced. I actually gave five of my medals to the Heart Foundation charity shop. I found the sods in the back of a long-disused chest of drawers,under a pile of paperwork about the Falkland conflict. I don't want them,the heart foundation needs all the help it can get-so,viola.

ANYFLIPPINGWAY [sorry] Carry On Films - yes,I agree 100%.
Too many shown,too often,always as a 'filler' for the adverts to be carried in. Personally,Carry On Constable still remains my favourite.
Next thing y'know,they'll be showing repeats of Only Fools and Horses.....oh...Ok,Last Of The Summer Wine...
